Parenting Gold # 2
Toolbox Tuesday: This week's gold nuggets include Parenting by Design (perfect for a great 2024), improving your parenting through micro-habits and how to lead a catastrophiser to a calm space.
Welcome to the second in the Parenting Gold series, where I share the most popular Parenting Toolbox posts of the last twelve months.
You can catch the first edition of the Parenting Gold series here.
This edition has three ripping articles. If your child has a tendency to blow simple matter out of all proportion then the first article is right up your alley.
If you want to discover an easy easy to great parenting then Everyday micro-habits to transform your parenting is definitely for you.
The start of the New Year is the ideal time to reflect and review how (family) life is going for you. My Parenting by Design article will run you through a simple process to help you set some great parenting goals this year.
So grab a cup or glass of your favourite refreshment.
Sit back.
Relax.
Read on.
And enjoy!
Does your child blow negative things out of all proportion? Do they go straight into panic mode when life doesn’t go their way. If so, you may have a catastrophiser on your hands.
Catastrophising makes kids feel miserable. Worse, they often don’t want to do anything because they expect the worst possible outcome.
A child’s or teen’s catastrophising makes you feel awful as a parent. You can feel powerless, at a time when you want to help your child. But nothing will help until you winde back your child’s language, and their thinking. Here’s how.
Respond positively when kids catastrophise.
I love micro-habits.
They are the easiest way to create change.
Want to be a better listener when you’re with your child? If so, turn your toes to face them when they talk and you’ll be giving your full attention. That’s such an easy micro-habit to develop.
Learn how micro-habits can help you be a better parent in this super popular parenting post.
Everyday micro-habits that will transform your parenting
Do you have a parenting strategy?
Do you sit down and review your parenting at the end of the year?
I’m hoping you answered Yes to both questions. If not, don’t despair. Now’s your perfect chance to reflect on the year that’s gone and develop a coherent strategy for the year ahead.
Sit down (preferably with a partner, but if not that’s fine) and reflect on these questions:
What worked for you this year as a parent?
What’s not working?
Where does my energy (mental and physical) go as a parent?
What in family-life is working for each child?
What should you do more of, less of as a parent this year?
Now for that coherent strategy to guide you over the following year(s)! Read the following article, which was one of the most widely read articles last year to learn how to build your parenting strategy.

Did you know that Parenting Toolbox is FREE?
Yep, there is no paid tier.
I’m giving you all my wisdom and experience FREE.
Nothing is held back and placed behind a paywall, as most writers on Substack do.
The best payment I can receive is for you to recommend Parenting Toolbox to your friends, family and colleagues.
There’s no catch. I won’t suddenly include a paid section. I love what I do and my mission is to help as many parents as possible get the tools they need to raise happy, resilient kids and enjoy their parenting journey.
