Some excellent points here, thanks, but one comment jumped off the page at me—you stated in effect, children spend more time with their parents than ever before. But if we take a good accounting, this is actually not the case, at least for those children attending public school. Based on my own family and friends experiences, in our state and other states as well, those in public school attend in person eight hours, have clubs and/or tutoring after, then sports, etc. I’m amazed at how few hours families actually spend together. And if you divide it between quality time and the time spent shuttling kids in the car, we might be measuring time spent together in minutes, not hours. It’s one of the many reasons we chose homeschooling, we wanted peace and quiet for our kids, with plenty of time for them to talk to their own brains, instead of robotically going through each day. And especially we wanted to be the influencers and role models to our children. Only time together can allow for that.
Concerning your point on independence, I think you’ve really touched on something important. I believe parents could work on this, without putting their children in harm’s way, or going “free range”. With independence comes a sense of accomplishment and the desire to keep going and try again. Small things count.
Hi Michael, You may find my articles of interest. I agree with all your premises as outlined in your article. I'm sending a link to your stack, to my sister.
There is a physiological reason why anxiety has increased in children and it is easy to correct.
I need to tip over a few sacred cows to set the scene. Science and medicine have been intentionally mis-directed with planted 'FAUX' instead of 'FACTS'. Our schooled daze program required we regurgitate instead of satisfying our curiosity with questions to our teachers and hence these faux remained unchallenged. We went on to get A's for great memories and not great questions and this continued throughout all levels of education. The established stories/lies remained protected by gatekeepers setup in education, media, publishing, and funding.
So now I'm going to tell you I've logically dismissed the gaseous exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide as a FRAUD. We are not machines using gases of combustion and exhaust: oxygen and carbon dioxide. The article is titled: We breathe air not oxygen. And it is paramount we know the difference.
Instead, our physiology is underpinned by hydration, not oxygenation. Hydration equals SALT plus water. With salt being the lead in the dance of hydration.
Chronic dehydration began in the 75-80s with the salt restriction directives and every dis-ease has increased massively. This is when diligent mothers removed the salt from the kitchen table setting to keep their families healthy.
My article: How does salt restriction lead to heart dis-ease and fear based reactionary thinking? I link the adrenals with dehydration.
Dehydration has a few other names, hyponatremia or low salt, morning sickness, mountain sickness, travel sickness, PMT. The symptoms all match.
Dehydration is an emergency. Emergencies are managed by the adrenals. All the adrenocortical hormones are deployed, not just aldosterone.
Chronic dehydration leads to chronic adrenal management and adrenal fatigue or chronic fatigue.
The surges of adrenaline and cortisol cause anxiety and even panic for no good reason. Under the influence of the adrenals the FIGHT/FLIGHT/FREEZE response prevents rational thinking. Mole hills become mountains, there is no perspective.
Salt turns off the adrenals as it returns hydration and allows them to rest and recoup.
A pinch of salt under the tongue will calm a child and prevent a tantrum and decisions that could spiral into self harm.
Try this out for yourself. Remember next time you feel the surge of adrenaline, think SALT.
Take some salt, then notice the calm returning, the strategic brain returning.
